Trumpet golden rose

A rose that juts out like a trumpet -
‘you can like it – or else you can lump it!’
it seems to be saying -
with loud music, braying -
that warm yellow rose like a trumpet.

Ivory dahlia

A colour that’s pretty, I’ve learnt,
is the shade of meringue that is burnt.
I have to confide
that if I were a bride -
I’d practise this thing that I’ve learnt.

This ivory-pigmented bloom
is soothing as life in the womb.
The colour is dreamy
like coffee so creamy.
And I made ample use of my zoom.

Sunset coloured dahlias

This dahlia salmon and yellow
is splendidly vibrant and mellow,
and if you’re awake
to see the day break
it’s sure to be this shade of yellow.

If ever a flower looked cheerful…
and pedants – don’t give me an earful -
for I know it’s unreal
and that flowers can’t feel…
still…I reckon this flower looks cheerful!

Willow-herb flowers

These flowers are wonderfully bright!
They’re such an exuberant sight.
In September the leaves
are as golden as sheaves,
a welcome, autumnal delight.

How stately and grand are these flowers.
Within the plant world, they are towers.
And layer upon layer
of florets are there -
like “multies”, these marvellous flowers!

“Multies” = tower blocks (Scotland).

Daisies

In all sorts of grass-covered spots
little daisies appeared – lots and lots,
straightforward and bright,
plain yellow and white,
if daisies were kids – they’d be tots!

A community-spirited daisy
had a thought that was not at all crazy:
“One could play dot-to-dot
in this big garden plot -
but how to join daisy to daisy?”

Contrasting Characters

These blooms with a down-hanging flow
are made so they don’t have to show
what is hidden inside -
so they rarely confide;
like some of the people I know.

How different each character is,
it shouldn’t get us in a ‘tizz’ -
some people will trust
for they quite simply must -
it’s their nature – it’s just how it is.

Growing from a wall in my street, these two flower species spoke to me of two types of personality: the privacy-loving ‘foxglove’ type and the open, trusting ‘feverfew’ (daisy-like) type.

Golden Rose with Drops

A friend once related the tricks
a photographer uses – he flicks
drops all over a flower
to look like a shower.
(I’d never resort to such tricks!)

It looks like a person in tears -
beset by their worries and fears.
Yet this rose has great gladness
that shines through the sadness -
such dignified, beautiful tears.

Water-lily pair

Sometimes it’s not till midday
that a lily will put on display
its lovely white petals
encased in large sepals
enticed by the sun’s golden ray.

A younger and older brother;
a child sitting next to its mother;
they look quite complete;
endearing and sweet;
just glad to be with one another.

Butterfly Wing

Such a marvellous, well-chosen blend -
combined, to a sole pleasing end -
this subtle design -
like a quality wine -
what a mellow, autumnal blend.

I’d never have been aware
that an underwing could be so fair
if I hadn’t walked down
on my way into town
Nelson Street when this creature was there.

A Swan Couple

Skimming the lake
the swan pair are sailing
with the ease of lifting balloons.

Belled out, and feather-perfect,
they have come to survey the shore,
with noble heads.

Clearly a pair,
they snuffle and snort,
then bob their necks

in a “hearting” display -
for us, for one another -
or all three?
